Stop driving immediately. This warning indicates a condition that can cause severe mechanical damage or create a safety hazard if ignored.
What it means
Oil pressure has dropped critically low. Running an engine with low oil pressure causes metal-on-metal contact in the engine bearings, which can destroy an engine in minutes. This is the most urgent warning light on your dashboard.
What to do
- 1Pull over safely and turn off the engine immediately — do not continue driving
- 2Wait 10 minutes, then check the oil dipstick — if oil is low, add oil before restarting
- 3If oil level is normal, do not restart — the oil pump or pressure sensor may have failed
- 4Have the vehicle towed to a mechanic — driving further risks catastrophic engine failure
