Privacy Policy

Short version: We collect very little, don't sell anything, and are transparent about affiliate relationships.

What we collect

MyOBDCode collects minimal data. When you use our tools (OBD lookup, VIN decoder, recall checker), we log the search query and timestamp for debugging and aggregate analytics — no personally identifiable information is attached to these logs.

If you contact us, we store your email and message to respond to your inquiry.

If you sign up for recall alerts (coming soon), we store your email address and VIN to notify you. You can unsubscribe at any time.

What we do not collect

We do not collect your name, location, browsing history across other sites, or any other data beyond what's described above. We do not require account creation for any free tool. We do not run fingerprinting scripts.

Analytics

We use PostHog for product analytics — tracking aggregate usage patterns like which tools are most popular and where users drop off. PostHog is configured without personally identifiable data. We do not use Google Analytics.

Affiliate relationships

Some links on MyOBDCode — particularly parts links (Amazon), mechanic booking (Openbay / RepairSmith), and insurance comparisons (EverQuote / MediaAlpha) — are affiliate links. We earn a commission when you click and purchase. This does not affect the price you pay or the order in which results appear. All sponsored content is clearly labeled "Sponsored."

Cookies

We use a single first-party cookie to remember your recent searches within a session (stored in localStorage, not transmitted to our servers). We do not use third-party advertising cookies. We do not participate in cross-site tracking.

NHTSA data

All VIN and recall data displayed on MyOBDCode comes from NHTSA's public API. This data is a matter of public record and is not considered private information. We cache API responses for performance but do not store or sell this data.
