What it means
Transmission fluid has exceeded safe operating temperature. This is common when towing heavy loads or driving in stop-and-go traffic. Overheating transmission fluid breaks down rapidly and can cause expensive damage.
What to do
- 1If towing: pull over and let the transmission cool for 30 minutes
- 2If in traffic: shift to neutral at long stops to reduce heat generation
- 3After cooling: check transmission fluid level and condition (should be red/pink, not dark brown)
- 4If the light returns frequently, the transmission cooler may be faulty or fluid needs changing
